Girls basketball: San Jacinto gets big win against Citrus Hill, 62-36

Citrus Hill visited the Tiger Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 11.[/caption] ■ By Corey Evan / Contributed One of the hardest things for any new sports coach to do is keep up or pick up the team momentum their predecessors had going. Such is true for Coach Tiffany White of San Jacinto High School. But if her 2019 girls basketball team is any indicator, she’s handling the task well. And with Citrus Hill visiting the Tiger Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 11, that would show just how well. Her Tigers stepped onto the court on form and ready for the challenge, scoring the first points of the game almost instantly. In the first quarter alone, San Jacinto scored 19 points. Despite showing tenacity of their own, the Hawks struggled until the last minute of this quarter to get on the board with a measly three. The Tigers continued their winning ways in the second quarter, picking up 12 more points along the way. The Hawks improved slightly, taking in seven points. But going into halftime, it was clear which team needed to play the proverbial 52-pickup. And pickup they did, to an extent: In quarter three, the Hawks picked up 11 points on several Tiger fouls. But the Tigers would show no signs of slowing down, sinking 13 points of their own. In the final quarter of gameplay, the Hawks squeezed in 15 points marking their best quarter this game. But the Tigers never let up, bringing in a big finish with 18 points. The day clearly belonged to San Jacinto with a final score of 62-36. White says her predecessor Larry Lacy left her with a winning formula to follow and some big shoes to fill. “He did a great job with this program and really got the ball rolling for us, so it’s actually easy! He has the girls on the program, and I pretty much just… keep the ball rolling.” The top three scorers this game were Sydney Woodley with 24 big points, Jhesmine Artagame with 12 and Aleighna Mejia who dropped in 10. This win sees San Jacinto improving to 4-nil in Mountain Pass League play and 11-6 overall, as Citrus descends to 2-2 and 8-9 as of press time.
